So, in 1839, the French artist and inventor Louis Daguerre accidentally discovered that images could be fixed on a plate coated with silver iodide if it was soaked in mercury vapor.

This unusual way of creating photographs led to the invention of daguerreotype, one of the first types of photography.

The fashion craze came to the Russian Empire at the end of the summer of 1839. And in October, a talented Russian engineer, Lieutenant Colonel Franz Iosifovich Eremin, made the first daguerreotype in Russia. He captured the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
